Position Overview
The Tax Specialist is a full-time role focused on managing the tax compliance of the organization. This position involves handling various tax-related tasks, including finalizing tax audits, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring adherence to tax laws and federal regulations. The role is essential for supporting the finance department and offers opportunities for professional growth within a fast-growing startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Recognize and analyze basic tax transactions including income tax, sales tax, payroll tax, and other relevant taxes based on GAAP and relevant tax regulations.
- Assist in reconciling tax-related accounts and statements regularly.
- Process tax payments for various tax obligations including income tax, sales tax, and other regulatory taxes.
- Organize and maintain tax-related documents and records within the department.
- Prepare and file sales and use tax returns with state and local government agencies.
- File business licenses, withholding taxes, independent contractor forms, and other tax-related documents as required.
- Assist in annual business planning by providing tax-related inputs for expense budgeting, interest calculations, and tax projections.
- Research tax laws and regulations to stay up to date on any tax changes to remain in compliance.
- Collaborate with the Tax Manager in implementing tax-saving strategies and ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations.
- Provide support in month-end and year-end tax closing processes.
- Assist in IRS and state audits.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field with a focus on tax.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in tax accounting or related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite of Products (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills including functions such as sum, if, sumif, count, vlookup, index, etc.
- Familiarity with accounting software such as SAP, QuickBooks, or similar systems.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and tax regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively communicate with colleagues at all levels.
- Proactive attitude and ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
